These sermons are often regarded as badly composed and non-original. However, the systematic comparison of such texts with their most probable prototypes demonstrates that Russian intellectuals were competent enough to add their own observations and estimations to the available information about the West leaning. Our knowledge of political and cultural relations between Rus’ and western Europe extends remarkably when we establish by whom and when the noted amplifications were made.

Shakhmatov’s hypothesis of the so-called Načalnyj Svod is one of the most important achievements in the study of Old Rus’ chronicles. However, it remains a challenging task to reconstruct the text of this Svod, and – in particular – to determine where it ended. This article discusses the evidence demonstrating and disproving that the Načalnyj Svod ended with the story on the blinding of prince Vasilko of Terebovl’.

A belief that to hear a wolf howl was a good omen can be noticed among many Turkic peoples (eg Tatars and Bashkirs), so we may conclude that such a belief also existed among Kipchaks. Author of article of 1097 was familiar with kipchak culture and used a knowledge about their beliefs in constructing the story about the battle at Wiar river.

The first one (which can be traced back to the first half — middle of the 11th century) shows the awareness of the differences between two existing christian confessions, the second one (which most likely belongs to the so-called Načalnyj svod) is fiiled with hatred to the western neighbours, whlie the third one (corresponding to the Povest' Vremennykh Lět) shows that a kind of reconciliation was achieved and the christianity was understood by the chroniclers of the epoch as if it hadn´t ever divided.

In modern historiography these relations are described as an unappeasable antagonism. However from a contemporary’s point of view situation seems to be more complex. A detailed study of characteristics and fucntions given to Kipchaks in Old Rus' chronicles allows to learn that an attitude towards steppe inhabitants was at least ambivalent.

Both of them were inserted in the beginning of the 12th century while transforming so-called Nachalnyj svod into Pověst Vremennykh lět. It looks like etnicity had no big importance for Old Rus' literacy men of the period.

However, annalistic narrative structure gave chroniclers scanty possibilities to express their vision of the world, leaving the most part of it non-explicated. Several 'review' fragments (eg. so-called preface to Pověst Vremennykh Lět) aren't enough to fulfill the lack. What we need is a thesaurus of chroniclers' opinions on all the basic social and historical problems.

The reviewed book is modelled after a traditional structure for such type of an edition, but at the same time the author demonstrates his full awareness of the newest developments in the field of auxiliary sciences of history and of the interdisciplinary nature of palaeographic studies as well. Several inaccuracies in details which the book contains should be understood first of all as an evidence of deficiencies in an exchange of information between Russian and Polish scientists.
