Steel Panthers III is a very challenging game and the 92 page manual is a must read to understand the controls.

The unit graphics in Steel Panthers III are lacking to say the least. Your units look like green dots and the poor graphics can not even be saved by using the zoom in feature. However the terrain graphics are great.

Sound in the game is very good. All of your Weapons, Soldiers, Tanks and Planes sound realistic.

The game sports a scenario generator - battle generator and campaign editor which helps to increase replay value.

Some improvements in Steel Panthers III over Steel Panthers I & II are:

(1). Each hex -> 200 yards

(2). Command multi-national forces

(3). Call reinforcements during game play.

Steel Panthers III comes is along game and for hard core wargamers, who don't mind the poor unit graphics, its six campaigns and over 40 individual scenarios will give hours of enjoyment.

The movement of your units in Steel Panthers III is very simple. When a unit is selected, all hexs within the units movement range become highlighted. Once a unit is selected clicking on the hex you want that unit to move to, with the left mouse button, moves the unit to the new location.

Steel Panthers III has several significant drawbacks:

(1). The game interface is overly complex and difficult to learn to use.

(2). Steel Panthers III is playable only via e-mail, having no other multi-player capabilities.

(3). Finally, the idea that the game is designed for the DOS platform may be a turn off for some gamers.

Graphics: Poor unit graphics, Great terrain graphics.

Sound: Realistic.

Enjoyment: A good game for veteran war gamers.

Replay Value: There is a good deal of gaming here but limited mutiplayer capability.

Steel Panthers III is the third in the Steel Panther series, which chronicles the exploits of tanks from a top-down hex-based setting.

This time, SSI changed the scale slightly to allow larger battlefields and unit command structures, with improved leaders and command interface. Otherwise, this game isn't much changed from Steel Panthers II: Modern Battles.

Steel Panthers III: Brigade Command is the sequel to Steel Panthers II, covering the battles and conflicts throughout World War 2 and after.

Steel Panthers III puts the player into the role of Brigade Commander, leader of an entire sector of battle, as you lead your forces (armor, infantry, artillery, etc.) around the hex grid battlefields to capture or defend specific objective hexes. You can call in airstrikes or artillery bombardment, and try to outmaneuver and outsmart your opponent in the third rendition of the Steel Panthers turn-based games.

in-game layout is styled to look like a real life tabletop board game played without computers, but with the added benefit of the computer takeing care of all the minute calculations and evaluations for you. The graphics are functional, but unless you change the settings to single unit marker, you won't be able to tell the various units apart. Graphically the game is similar to Steel Panthers II, but with smaller icons.

The controls are simple to figure out: Left Click selects units and gives orders while Right Click changes the direction your unit is facing, or allows you to open the unit information screen for the selected unit. Thankfully, the various buttons along the side of the screen are self-explanatory.

Steel Panthers III: Brigade Command puts the player in command of an entire brigade; hence the name. You can expect to command over one hundred different units, over a battlefield easily four times larger then the largest maps in the previous two Steel Panthers titles.

All the changes presented in Steel Panthers II also exist in this release, while the two most important changes are the ability to shift artillery without losing valuable turns, and not being required to have a unit face the center of a hexside.

Steel Panthers Iii Brigade Command 1939 1999

Since a player is commanding such a large force, each unit is actually made up of multiple individuals. A vehicle unit can have anywhere between two and five vehicles in it, and infantry can easily have up to sixty individual soldiers. What this means is that at the expense of one attack, a unit can actually score multiple hits on a single target. Also, vehicle damage has been removed. The vehicles within a unit are either undamaged or destroyed, nothing in between. This makes it much safer to move vehicles through swamps, across rivers, and through any other hindering terrain.

Units have also gained the ability to 'Dig In' when they don't move for a few turns. Digging In increases defense and morale for the unit as long as it doesn't move after doing so. Multiplayer consists of Hotseat play within the various scenarios.

Unfortunately, it can take a few hours to play even the smallest battles, and because of the sheer size of the battlefields the computer AI has been weakened/dumbed down when compared to the previous games in the series. The main letdown with the computer AI is the inability to use Engineer units. In any defensive battle, all a player has to do is line the edge hexes of their deployment zone with Mines, Barbed Wire, and Dragons Teeth to totally prevent the computer from ever attacking with anything other then artillery and airstrikes. This tactic is easily accomplished in every defensive battle because of the massive amount of Buy Points that allow you buy enough Mine Points to do just that.

Steel Panthers III: Brigade Command is an interesting attempt to put a player in the role of the main army commander, but the sheer size of the battles and maps makes the battles become boring quickly as you move the hundredth unit for the fourth time without anything happening. If you are a major fan of the Steel Panthers series, give this a shot just to say that you have.

Casual gamers should steer clear of this title, and instead try the first or second Steel Panthers titles.

Steel Panthers II is a turn based wargame focusing on combined tac-air/armor/infantry small unit actions around the world in the in the Post-World War II era. The combat area is viewed from a bird's eye view and each individual vehicle, soldier, or heavy gun is portrayed with a lifelike top-view. Appropriate audio accompanies movement and combat. The game may be played in single historical scenarios (including Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East) as well as hypothetical situations. The game may also be played as a continuing campaign where the player must allocate and maintain his forces from one battle to the next. Two-player e-mail play is supported. A scenario generator quickly creates random scenarios and a full-featured scenario editor is also included. Custom scenarios are available from SSI and from other sources.

While Steel Panthers covered armored warfare from 1939-1945, Steel Panthers 2: Modern Battles focuses on conflicts from 1950-2000. It is a turn-based strategy game, set on a map divided into hexagons. The basic game engine (graphics, user interface etc.) is nearly the same as in part one, with minor improvements. One important difference is the scale of the game: a bigger map, more units, which have more statistic values etc.

Steel Panthers 2: Modern Battles, the sequel to Steel Panthers, covers the battles and conflicts of the latter half of the 20th century, from the Korean War in the early 1950s through Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf in the early 1990s, and also includes a couple of hypothetical late-1990s scenarios.

Steel Panthers 2 puts the player into the role of a company commander. As you move your forces (armor, infantry, artillery, etc.) around the hex-grid battlefields to capture or defend specific objective hexes, you can call in air strikes and artillery bombardment, and try to outsmart and outmaneuver your opponent.

The gameplay is turn-based, and is played on a hexagonal grid in a board-game format. The graphics are functional, with enough differentiation between various units to tell them apart at a glance. The graphics are more refined than the original Steel Panthers.

The controls are simple to figure out: Left-click to select units and give orders; right-click to change the direction your unit is facing or open the unit information screen. The various buttons along the side of the screen are self-explanatory.

There are a few changes between Steel Panthers and Steel Panthers 2: Modern Battles, such as the introduction of missile-armed units, refined mobility, and the ability of a unit to look in almost any direction instead of straight at a hex side, movable artillery, and helicopters.

Helicopters have a special command that can only be given from within their unit information screen. That command changes the unit's altitude between Landed, Nap-of-the-Earth (the helicopter stays just above the terrain in its hex), and High Altitude. High altitude allows helicopters to see almost the entire map but also makes them visible and an easy target for enemy troops.

Undoubtedly, the biggest change is the introduction of the ability to shift artillery. In Steel Panthers, if you wanted to move the center point of an artillery barrage, you ended up with a two-turn or more delay until the artillery could attack again. Instead, Steel Panthers 2 allows you to move the center point of the artillery barrage up to two hexes with almost no delay between shots.

As with the original Steel Panthers, Steel Panthers 2 is historically accurate in its scenarios, campaigns, and units. Strategic Simulations Inc. clearly spent a lot of time and energy researching and accurately recreating all the weapons, vehicles, and battles for the player to enjoy.

Overall, it was a modest improvement over Steel Panthers, introducing many features the original was clearly lacking. The best of all the Steel Panthers games, Steel Panthers 2: Modern Battles set the standard for turn-based military command games, and every armchair general should give this game a shot.
