Review: Gothic 3 with the Community Patch 1.74. With the Community Patch this is one of the best action based graphical RPGs ever made. It removes the DRM of the original game so you do not need the original disc in the drive. (It does this with the permission of the owners and developers of the game. The ultimate source of games patches & addons on the web for Gothic 3. International Community Patch 1.5.2 - requires patch 1.12 (26MB) List of Changes in this patch and discussion forums. hey guys,in have been looking into gothic 3 and I can't wait to play it after my exams! I love the realism, and how you can kill whoever you want but it may come back to bite you and I just love everything I can't even put it into words hahah! Firstly, on steam, I'm guessing I need gothic 3, not the gothic 3 enhanced forsaken gods thing, as steam didn't make it clear its a standalone add on not the actual enhanced game? And then after i get gothic 3, how do I go about getting rid of the bugs with the community patch as in how to apply it? Any other mods I should be applying for my first time playing through? Thanks so much for any help and sorry for being such a noob but I,Mao excited to play this gem! :D
The following is everything you need for your play through of Gothic 3 in 2016+ with a mostly vanilla playthrough with added content/fixes/textures.
This is for the Steam/GOG stand alone versions.
Note: The steam beta branch has the latest community patch 1.75 but I do NOT recommend it because other mods/patches wont recognize it and wont install.
Many of the downloads below are in German and the installers may be German. The installs are straight forward (press next and tick boxes), and the ingame results will always be translated to English.
Download and Install the following in Order:
The Questpack Install is German. Tick the following boxes when prompted
'Grundinstallation - base
'Interface - modifizierter Kompass -interface with compass
'Neue Myrtana-Texturen - new textures
'Erhogte Sichtweite - higher view distance
*900mb Content Mod Pack 2.6 or newer but buggy 3.0 - adds new textures and content
Content Mod Pack Install Guide
This has a ton of install options, there are some notes about them in the installer so be sure to read each page
You can reinstall with different options as many times as you want so dont be afraid to experiment.
Here's some extra notes about each option.
Start with clicking KOMPLETE at the top to start with the recommended settings.
CM 2.6
CM with QP means 'Content mod WITH quest pack' - this is what most people want. Cm WITHOUT QP removes extra quests/dialog/content that were installed in the Quest pack. The reason this is here is because the quests are text-only while the vanilla game is fully voice acted. Some people may not like seeing the extra dialog text without voices so you can choose this option to just remove all the extra content.
Pre Alpha Options
World Textures - alpha world textures, not nearly as high def as the ones included, but more lore friendly.
G2 Soundtrack - lots of people hated the G3 soundtrack so the gothic 2 one can be switched out. Your choice
Hero Heads
No hero head - totally vanilla player face - short brown hair with goatee
New hero head - blonde hair with ponytail and goatee
Pre Alpha head - brown hair with big ass moustache
Menu Mods
These are just re-colors of the GUI, the only difference is the one that says compass just has a compass added.
Gothic 2 Monster
Just a collection of monster models from Gothic 2.
Gothic 2 Orc Mods
Lite - adds an orc faction using the Gothic 2 models
Full - replaces all orcs with the G2 models
Other
I recommend the citizen/merc/assassin models, the vanilla models look like dudes wearing burlap sacks.
*Screaming sounds - wont make a difference unless your game is in German so skip it
Monster Sounds - your preference, just adds the Gothic 2 monster voices since lots of people hate the Gothic 3 ones.
Enhanced visibility - DO NOT INSTALL THIS. Makes the view distance completely maxed out which cannot be played on any modern day hardware. I get 30FPS on Very high using the mod on a 980TI at 1080p
Consequences - adds a totally new mod called consequences. You can read about it here(translated from german), from what i read it sounds a bit buggy so you may want to skip.
QP Speechfiles - probably does nothing since no voices for the english quest pack
*Make Game harder - reduces EXP a bit. Many folks say by endgame you become way overpowered so this may make it more fun.
Once this is done you CAN play the game, or read on for more tweaking.
Performance
From what I understand, this game ran like crap because it was unfinished from the start. The community patches fixed this at some point but then un-fixed it and the game still runs like crap and stutters on high end PC's if you try to pump the graphics up using the methods below. The game is also prone to crashing.
One thing that helps is the age old 4GB memory patcher here which originated from games like Fallout 3. Give that a go.
Graphics
The graphics file/tweaks are located in the Gothic 3/ini/Ge3.ini file
After the patches, the graphics are playable on almost every graphics card without any fps issues (as long as you did not install the Ultra view distance mod). There are a few ultra ini's around the web you can search for but they all suck. Even on a 980ti you will get 30fps or LESS when looking across a large field.
If you want to see what its like maxxed out, try this ge3.ini
This is one I tweaked myself that should give increase your view distance as much as possible, but will still get you a stable 65fps on a 980ti on the VERY HIGH preset when looking over a large open field . Download here
Edit: This was updated on 9/21 - better performance and visuals
Graphics INI Tweak tool
If you want to tweak one yourself this application G3SI will let you tweak your ini (along with the ingame shaders) with a GUI. The PDF manual is a must. If you modify the shaders, you will need to delete My DocumentsGothic 3 shader.cache, and when you start the game, you will need to let it compile for about 5-10 minutes while looking at a black screen for the new changes to take effect.
Whatever setting you choose, I highly recommend you go into the .ini it generates and adjust these two settings or your fps will tank:
Suggested Graphics Options
How To Install Gothic 3 Community Patch
Max everything out if you can
Disable FXAA and force it in your control panel
Disable Grain
Disable lense flares
Nvidia cards - use the following settings with the nvinspector preset to help you force AA and add Ambient Occlusion to the game. Guide to NVinspector
Misc Gameplay options
Many people recommend using the Alternative AI (checked by default) in the in-game settings. It makes combat more challenging and egaging.
Some people do NOT recommend the Alternative Balancing mod. Changes stuff like how many ability points you get in-game, forcing you to spec in warrior/mage and not being able to play a hybrid like in vanilla. You can google for opinions on what it does.
Under controls - turn mouse smoothing for x/y to -100 to disable it
Reshade
Gothic 3 uses the d3d9 reshade.dll. Presets can be downloaded here
Gothic 1 Patch
Combat
Combat in this game can be really hard. Melee combat is kind of like a shitty version of Witcher combat. You can't go around mashing left click or you'll get steamrolled by even the beasts in the starting area. For melee, backtracking while attacking periodically is your friend. I recommend looking up some guides, and using your BOW when you can.
